Opal
Opal Birthstone: Meaning and History
The name “opal” is believed to originate from the Sanskrit upala, meaning “precious stone.” In ancient Rome, it became opalus. Most opals are valued for their play-of-color—a shifting rainbow-like phenomenon that has inspired comparisons to fireworks, galaxies, and volcanoes.
Bedouins once thought opals contained lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms. Ancient Greeks believed opals granted prophetic gifts and protected against diseases. Europeans considered opals symbols of purity, hope, and truth. For centuries, opals were thought to embody the virtues of all gemstones.
Opal is also the traditional gift for the 14th wedding anniversary.
Where Are Opals Found?
Australia is the world’s most prolific source of opals, particularly black opals from Lightning Ridge. Ethiopia, Mexico, and Brazil are also significant producers. Other sources include Central Europe, Honduras, Indonesia, Madagascar, Peru, Turkey, and the USA.
Australia’s White Cliffs, Mintabie, Andamooka, and Coober Pedy yield white opals, while Queensland is the only source of boulder opals. Ethiopia’s Wollo Province produces opals in shades from white to chocolate brown, with some displaying play-of-color. Mexico’s Querétaro is famed for fire opals in yellow, orange, and red.
Caring for Opal
With a Mohs hardness of 5–6.5, opals are relatively soft and require careful storage to avoid scratches from harder gems. They are often treated with oils, waxes, or plastics. Doublets and triplets (opal slices glued to a base) should avoid prolonged water exposure and sudden temperature changes. Clean with warm soapy water only; avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaning.

Tourmaline
Tourmaline Birthstone: Meaning and History
Tourmaline, the newer October birthstone, derives its name from the Sinhalese toramalli, meaning “mixed gems,” as crystals often display multiple colors. Few gems rival tourmaline’s dazzling range. Ancient mystics believed it could inspire artistic expression—each color对应一种情绪.
The most popular varieties include pink and red rubellite, emerald-green “chrome” tourmaline, and neon green-blue “Paraíba” tourmaline. Historically, tourmaline was mistaken for other gems; the “Caesar’s Ruby” in the Russian crown is actually red tourmaline.
Different colors were thought to have unique healing properties: black tourmaline offered protection, pink symbolized love, and green enhanced courage. Tourmaline is the traditional gift for the 8th wedding anniversary.
Where Is Tourmaline Found?
Brazil is the most common source, but tourmaline is also mined in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, and other African countries. Historically, California and Maine were significant US sources.
Brazil’s Minas Gerais yields a virtual kaleidoscope of tourmaline from pegmatite mines. The 1980s saw the emergence of copper-bearing Paraíba tourmaline from Brazil, followed by discoveries in Mozambique and Nigeria. These gems command high prices due to their vivid colors and rarity.
Caring for Tourmaline
With a Mohs hardness of 7–7.5, tourmaline is suitable for daily wear. It is generally stable under light and most chemicals, but high heat may cause damage. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
