The Meaning and History of Sapphire
September’s birthstone has long symbolized sincerity, truth, faithfulness, and nobility. For centuries, sapphires adorned royalty and clergy robes. Ancient Greek and Roman elites believed blue sapphires protected them from envy and harm. Medieval clergy wore sapphires to represent heaven, while ancient Persians thought the earth rested on a giant sapphire, giving the sky its blue hue.

Where Are Sapphires Found?
Kashmir, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka are historically the most significant sources of September’s birthstone. Substantial deposits are also found in Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar, Montana (USA), and other Asian and African countries.
Kashmir sapphires, discovered in 1881, are famed for their “cornflower” blue hue. Myanmar’s Mogok region produces rich blue sapphires alongside rubies. Sri Lanka has been a source for over 2,000 years, yielding gems with exceptional brilliance. Thailand is both a source and a major cutting and treatment center for sapphires.

Caring for Your Sapphire
With a Mohs hardness of 9, sapphire is exceptionally durable and ideal for daily wear in rings and other jewelry. However, sapphires are often treated to enhance color or clarity. Heat treatment is common and permanent, widely accepted in the trade. Less common treatments like lattice diffusion, fracture filling, and dyeing may require special care.
Always ask about treatments before purchasing. Clean untreated or heat-treated sapphires with warm soapy water. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are generally safe for these. For fracture-filled or dyed stones, use a damp cloth.
