The Meaning and History Behind Natural Jade: A Journey Through Time and Culture

Many cultures throughout history have treasured jade not only for its captivating appearance and physical properties but also for its believed spiritual benefits. While most people recognize jade for its beautiful green color, there is a rich tapestry of history, culture, and significance that remains largely unknown to the general public.

#1: The Jade Origin and History

“Perhaps no other gemstone has the same aura of mystery as Burmese jadeite.” – Richard W. Hughes and fellow authors observed in their research article “BURMESE JADE: THE INSCRUTABLE GEM,” published by the GIA.

This observation perfectly captures the enigmatic nature of jade. Both nephrite and jadeite have been prized throughout Asia for centuries, becoming deeply embedded in various Asian cultures. The use of jade dates back thousands of years, when it was crafted into tools, arrowheads, and ornamental pieces, valued for its exceptional toughness, vibrant colors, and hardness. Today, this precious gem continues to be used in fine jewelry making, intricate carvings, and even as a sound investment option.

Interestingly, the use and origin of jade remained foreign to Westerners until relatively recently. In 1863, French mineralogist Alexis Damour analyzed bright green jades from what was then Burma. When he discovered these samples differed from what was known as Chinese jade (typically amphibole jade or nephrite), he named the mineral jadeite (Damour, 1863).

In Chinese, this precious gem is called Yu (玉). “To the Chinese, jade was traditionally defined by its ‘virtues,’ namely a compact, fine texture, tremendous toughness and high hardness, smooth and glossy luster, along with high translucency and the ability to take a high polish (Wang, 1994).” These exceptional qualities explain why jade was once used for the imperial seal of China.

Nephrite Jade Vs. Jadeite

There are two main types of jade – jadeite and nephrite. The differences between them can be understood through their color, hardness, and value, among other characteristics.

Jadeite is known as “hard jade” because its hardness rating on the Mohs hardness scale is 6.5-7. For comparison, diamonds, the hardest known mineral, rate a 10 on this scale.

Nephrite jade is known as “soft jade,” with a hardness rating of 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale. It’s only slightly softer than its counterpart, but both stones possess excellent toughness, meaning they resist chipping when struck better than many softer stones.

The color variety also differs significantly between the two. Jadeite’s color ranges from all shades of green to lavender, yellow, black, and even translucent forms, which represent the purest type of jadeite. The highest quality jadeite comes from Burma (now Myanmar), which is where all of our jadeite at JadeCollection originates. Unfortunately, Burmese jadeite is also the most frequently counterfeited due to its high market value.

The Meaning of Jade: Symbols of Prosperity, Good Luck and Fortune

According to the GIA, “The first jadeite reached China from Burma (now known as Myanmar) in the late 1700s, and late eighteenth and early nineteenth century carvers created masterpieces that are still unsurpassed in concept, design, and technical execution.”

These extraordinary pieces and the skills required to create them have been passed down through generations, as have the cultural beliefs and traditions associated with jade. One common belief is that jade serves as a protective gem. It’s a widespread practice to purchase jade bangles for elders (parents, grandparents) to wish them good health and safety.

Some common motifs you may encounter in jade designs include:

  • A circle (In Chinese: 平安扣, Literally translates to peace button): Worn to wish safety and prosperity upon the wearer.
  • The Dragon (龙): Symbolizes strength, courage, power, good luck, longevity, and protection.
  • The Buddha (佛): Helps the wearer stay connected with positive energies by attracting all positive vibrations to the core of their heart and mind.
  • The GuanYin (觀音): Represents the embodiment of charity and redemption in Chinese culture for thousands of years, synonymous with truth, goodness, and beauty.
  • The Bamboo: Symbolizes longevity, prosperity, and wealth due to its abundant growth and ability to thrive in diverse environments.
  • The Money Bag: Literally represents the accumulation of wealth and the preservation of that wealth over time.

The Value of Jade

Jade’s quality can be categorized into four main factors:

Color:
Generally, the more intense and vibrant the color, the more valuable the jade piece. For instance, jade bangles can range from below a couple hundred dollars for nearly white or off-white pieces to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the intense, vibrant green variety that most people associate with jade. One of the most expensive jade bangles ever sold was auctioned at Sotheby’s, fetching an extraordinary price.

Texture:
This refers to the coarseness of the stone visible in jade. “Jadeite’s texture can be fine, medium, or coarse, depending on variations in crystal size and hardness. These texture categories are sometimes called, respectively, old mine, relatively old mine, and new mine.” Generally, the less coarse the jade, the rarer and more valuable it is.

Transparency:
Jadeite’s transparency ranges from completely opaque to semitransparent. The more transparent the jade, the rarer and more valuable it becomes. The highest quality jadeite pieces are semitranslucent, enhancing the charm of their vibrant green or lavender colors. Additionally, stones without cloudy spots that obstruct transparency are even more prized.

Cut:
This refers to how well the jade has been carved. For example, a Buddha carving should appear lively and joyful, with no crooked eyebrows or smiles. Higher quality raw materials are typically entrusted to skilled carvers who can create pieces that enhance the gem’s value. Conversely, poor quality carving can diminish the value of the jade, especially if the flaws are significant.
