Kangxi Dynasty (Qing Dynasty) Five – Color Figure Story Phoenix Zun (Imitation of Ming Dynasty) | Antique Porcelain Collectible Display

[Collection Overview]

This piece is a Five – Color Figure Story Phoenix Zun made during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. It belongs to the classic “Qing imitation of Ming” style. The body of the vessel is exquisitely painted with figure story patterns using five – color glazes, and it bears an inscribed mark “Made in the Jiajing Reign of the Ming Dynasty”, which shows the respect and innovation towards the Jiajing five – color porcelain craftsmanship of the Ming Dynasty during the Kangxi period. With a dignified and elegant shape, gorgeous and harmonious glaze colors, and rich pattern themes, it is one of the representative works of the early Qing Dynasty’s five – color porcelain art, possessing both artistic appreciation and collection investment value.

[Craftsmanship and Materials]

  • Body and Glaze Texture: It uses fine and compact kaolin clay for the body. The body has a uniform thickness, and is covered with a transparent glaze all over. The glaze surface is smooth, delicate, with a tinge of blue in white, presenting the typical characteristics of the “sticky rice body” of the Kangxi period.
  • Five – Color Craftsmanship: The outlines are first drawn with under – glaze blue and white, and then filled with various colors such as red, green, yellow, blue, and purple on the over – glaze. The colors are bright, vivid, with a sharp yet harmonious contrast. The blue and white color is deep, stable, and the five – color glazes have distinct gradations of light and shade. It belongs to the “hard color” system and still retains its rich colors after hundreds of years.
  • Firing Technology: It adopts a two – step firing process. First, the blue and white body is fired at a high temperature, and then the over – glaze five – colors are fired at a low temperature (about 800 – 900℃), ensuring a tight combination between the glaze colors and the body, making it durable.

[Analysis of Shape and Patterns]

1.Shape Features

This piece has a classic flower – vase shape. The mouth is flared outwards, the neck is slightly constricted, the middle part has a bulging belly, the lower abdomen tapers inwards and then the foot flares outwards. The overall lines are smooth, and the proportions are well – coordinated. The whole body is hexagonal with regular edges and corners. It has a moderate height, combining a sense of stability and a touch of elegance. It is suitable for display in a study, living room or other spaces, showing the charm of Oriental classicism.

2.Pattern Details

  • At the Mouth: It is decorated with blue and white fret patterns and geometric patterns. The frame is dotted with yellow and green colors. Above it, there is an inscribed blue and white regular script mark “Made in the Jiajing Reign of the Ming Dynasty”, with a strong and forceful stroke, which is a typical Qing Dynasty mark of imitation, reflecting the admiration for the Ming Dynasty porcelain art.
  • Main Pattern Area: A figure story scene is painted in five colors. The figures are wearing traditional gowns, either sitting in front of a table or standing with folded hands. They have full faces, vivid expressions, and smooth clothing wrinkles. Surrounding them are auspicious patterns such as pine stones, lingzhi mushrooms, and flowers, symbolizing good fortune, longevity, and well – being.
  • Auxiliary Patterns: The neck and the foot are decorated with sea and cliff patterns, with rolling waves, interspersed with clouds and auspicious birds (in line with the theme of the “Phoenix Zun”). At the bottom, green is used to paint the rocks, and blue is used to dot the water waves, with rich layers and delicate details.

[Historical and Cultural Background]

The Kangxi reign was the heyday of the development of five – color porcelain in the Qing Dynasty. Due to the introduction of minerals such as iron and copper into the glazes, the colors became more vivid and intense, and it is commonly known as “hard color”. This “Qing imitation of Ming” style reflects the social fashion of advocating ancient and elegant things in the early Qing Dynasty. Craftsmen during the Kangxi period often imitated the classic varieties of the Yongle, Xuande, Jiajing, and Wanli periods of the Ming Dynasty and incorporated the aesthetics of their own era, forming a unique artistic style. The use of the “mark of imitation” is not only a tribute to the previous dynasty’s craftsmanship but also implies the cultural meaning of “inheriting the ancient in a prosperous era”, providing valuable physical evidence for the study of the early Qing Dynasty’s ceramic fashion.

[Collection Value and Display Suggestions]

  • Collection Significance: Qing Kangxi five – color porcelain has always been a popular category in the antique collection market. This piece has a classic shape, exquisite patterns, and a clear mark. It has been well – preserved for hundreds of years, with high historical and artistic value.
  • Display Matching: It is suitable for being displayed on a traditional Chinese wooden antique shelf, a study table, or in a modern minimalist space as a cultural and artistic display. It can also be combined with other Ming and Qing porcelain, calligraphy, paintings, and antiques to create a strong Oriental cultural atmosphere.
